Cropping that looks better

  • Use the thirds. The thin lines split the box into thirds. Put eyes, a horizon or the main object on one of those lines rather than dead centre.
  • Leave some air. In portraits, keep a little space above the head and in the direction the person is looking.
  • Straight lines. Crop so door frames and horizons are not cut at awkward angles near the edge.
  • Cut the clutter. A bin, a fan or half a stranger at the edge is easy to remove here.

Cropping document photos

When you photograph a certificate on a table, crop to the edges of the paper with Free shape. The page looks like a proper scan, the file gets smaller, and a portal is more likely to accept it. Then turn it into a PDF with JPG to PDF or fit it to a size limit with Compress Image.

Does cropping lower quality?

No. The part you keep is not resized, so it stays exactly as sharp as in the original. The file gets smaller simply because there are fewer pixels.
