Which format should I pick?
| Format | Best for | Plays on |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 | Sharing, WhatsApp, YouTube, websites, almost everything | Every phone, computer and TV |
| MOV | Apple apps such as iMovie and Final Cut | Apple devices, most editors |
| WebM | Websites that want open formats | Chrome, Firefox, Android |
| MKV | Keeping several audio or subtitle tracks | VLC, computers, many smart TVs |
| MP3 | Just the sound, for music or recordings | Everything |
| WAV | Uncompressed sound for editing | Everything, but large files |
Why some conversions take seconds
A video file is a container, such as MP4 or MOV, holding a video stream and a sound stream inside. MOV and MP4 usually hold the same H.264 video and AAC sound. Converting between them only needs a new container, so FileFitly copies the streams across without touching the picture. It is fast and there is no quality loss.
When the new format cannot hold the old streams, for example H.264 into WebM, the video has to be re-encoded. That takes longer and uses your device’s video encoder.
Common conversions
- MOV to MP4: iPhone videos copied to Windows, or edits from a Mac, that a website will not accept.
- WebM to MP4: screen recordings and downloaded clips that will not play on an iPhone or upload to some apps.
- MKV to MP4: files that play on a computer but not on a phone or TV.
- Video to MP3: lectures, podcasts or songs you only want to listen to. See Video to MP3.
Cutting a clip
Times can be written as seconds (90) or minutes and seconds (1:30). Leave Start empty to begin at the beginning, and End empty to go to the end. Cutting together with “Keep quality” is quickest when the format stays the same.
Need the clip under a size limit afterwards? Use Compress Video.
Browser support
Conversion uses your browser’s built-in video engine. The latest Chrome, Edge and Safari handle MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. A browser can only convert video formats it can read; iPhone HEVC videos, for example, need Safari or Chrome or Edge on a system with HEVC support. The page tells you if a file cannot be read.
Questions people ask
Does converting reduce quality?
Not when the streams can be copied, such as MOV to MP4 in most cases. When re-encoding is needed, Keep quality uses a high bitrate.
Can I convert AVI or WMV?
Not yet. These older formats are not supported by browser video engines.
Is there a size limit?
No fixed limit. Very large files depend on your device's memory.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything happens on your device.
