How to find a pincode
- Know the pincode? Type all six digits to see every post office that uses it, whether each one delivers mail, and the district and state.
- Know the place? Type part of the name, such as “kora” for Koramangala. Matches that start with your text come first.
- Want a whole district? Open More options, pick the state and district, and see every pincode in it.
What the six digits mean
The first digit is the region (for example 1 for Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and nearby, 4 for Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, 6 for Tamil Nadu and Kerala), the first two together are the postal circle, the first three are the sorting district, and the last three are the delivery post office. That is why neighbouring areas often share the first four digits.
Head office, sub office and branch office
A head office runs the post offices in an area, a sub office handles everyday counter work, and a branch office is a small office, often in a village. “Delivery” means the office delivers letters and parcels; a non-delivery office only provides counter services. One pincode can cover several offices.
Where the data comes from
The list is the all-India pincode directory published by the Department of Posts on the government’s open data portal, data.gov.in. Post offices open, close and move occasionally, so for an important parcel or a legal form, confirm the pincode on the India Post website or at the post office.
Questions people ask
How many pincodes are covered?
Over 19,000 pincodes and more than 1.6 lakh post offices across all states and union territories.
Why does my area show a different district?
Postal districts sometimes differ from administrative districts, and a pincode can serve villages in two districts. Each office's own district is shown when it differs.
