How words are counted
A word is any run of letters or numbers, so “e-mail”, “don’t” and “2026” each count once, and punctuation on its own does not count. Hindi words separated by spaces are counted the same way, and the full stop of Hindi (।) ends a sentence just like a full stop in English.
Characters are counted the way a reader sees them. A Hindi letter with its matra, such as “कि”, counts as one, and so does an emoji. That matches what you see on the screen rather than the hidden codes underneath, which is why some other counters give a higher number for Hindi.

| SMS (English) | 160 characters per message |
Apps change their limits from time to time; if a post is rejected, check the app’s own help page.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time assumes about 230 words a minute, a normal pace for an adult reading on screen. Speaking time, under More options, assumes about 140 words a minute, which is a comfortable speed for a speech or a presentation. A five-minute speech is therefore roughly 700 words.
Using it to write better
Open More options to see your most used words. If one word appears far more than the rest, swap a few for synonyms. The longest sentence is also shown: anything over about 30 words is hard to follow, so split it in two.
Questions people ask
Does it count Hindi words correctly?
Yes. Words are split on spaces and punctuation, including the Hindi full stop (।), and a letter with its matra counts as one character.
Is my text saved anywhere?
Only on your own device, so a refresh does not lose your draft. It is never sent to FileFitly. Press Clear to remove it.
How is reading time calculated?
Word count divided by 230 words per minute, rounded. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute.
Do numbers count as words?
Yes. 2026 or 15,000 count as one word each, as most teachers and editors count them.
